Zucchini and the Yellow Squash

The small balcony of our apartment is slowly turning into a mini-farm. All we need is some nice sheep.

While watching green onion and carrots grow, I thought it would be nice to have some squash. Hey, I heard they were easy to grow, and they make lots. I really like summer squash, so let's give it a go!

I got some seeds at Home Depot on 4/1
Planted them on 4/4
(note to self: don't plant ALL the seeds at once.)
The planter has tangerine seeds

Sprouting already! (4/8)

Cute leaves! (4/10)
Hmm...(4/11)
Asher is way worried that we're going to have too much squash.
So we thinned it out to 4 each. (4/16)
Here we have zucchini
...and yellow squash.
more leaves (4/19)
Take note of the sneaky 5th one that appeared out of nowhere on top right.

Hmm this may be too crowded too...(4/25)
Growing still (4/28)

I also found a nifty way of recycling gallon milk jugs, so I'm growing one zucchini upside-down.
And a yellow squash on top.

If all goes well, we'll have squash by the end of May! Mmm!

Green Onions, Celery, and Soy! Oh Boy!

I was encouraged by the carrots. Maybe my thumb is changing colors from black to green? Maybe more like olive green.

Here's what happens to green onions if you put the root in water:

Day 1: (3/12) little roots come out

Day 2: (3/13) Small sprout emerges

Day 3: (3/14): sprout grows taller

Started another one supported by twist ties: (3/22)

(3/23)
(3/24)
(3/28)
Planted the first 3 in the pot (3/29)
Still going strong in just water (3/29)

Here's what happens to the middle part of celery:

Rescued from trash (3/6)
Happy leaves! (3/11)
Hey look, roots! (3/11)
Happily planted (3/28) I think they make really nice potted plants.

Organic soy beans also germinated:
Look! roots! (3/19) Planted 2 beans.
Maybe we'll have a cup of edamame.
Starting to emerge from soil (3/23)

Hello, cotyledons! (3/28)

Can you see the little leaves? (3/29)
This one still has the bean skin on the tip. (3/29)
Growing (3/31)
Pac-man coming out of pac-man! (4/1)

I also bought potted mint, basil, zucchini seeds and yellow squash seeds. My garden is unstoppable.

Waiting for spring with carrots

I like knitting and other wintery things, but I also like the warm weather. I like waking up and not having to step on cold tiles of the bathroom.

In the beginning of the month we had some carrots and I saw that one was sort of growing sprouts, so I saved the tops and put them in a bowl with some fish tank water. They are growing, and their small leaves are so cute! I'm really surprised how quickly they grow, and it's really nice having some greenery (for free!) in the kitchen.

Day 1 (3/3): Right out of the refrigerator, straight to the bowl
Ikumi's carrot day 1

Day 2: Leaves are already turning green, so I added another friend.
Day 3: Really fun watching them grow!
Day 4: Leaves are turning green, and new sprouts are coming out from inside the old ones (in layers) <-I should know this term, but oh well.
Day 5: Look at all the leaves! I'm surprised to see how different these leaves are. Are they different species of carrots?

Day 6: Trivia of the day: Carrots originate from Afghanistan. Who'd thunk it? Added another friend.

Day 7 (3/9): They are so much taller then the edges of the bowl now! There's a quiet one...hmmm is that one alive? Asher thinks not, but I'm giving it a few more days.
